I was a little angry last week. I got hit by something I’m sure you are all very aware of. It is a disturbing trend in the grocery industry (for that matter the entire retail market). The product amounts are getting smaller in an attempt to disguise actual price increases. Most of the time, you can clearly see that the amount of product has changed–I can kind of accept that. I opened a can of Ro*Tel a couple of days ago and there was noticeably a lot less product in the can–I checked the label and it still had 10 ounces on the label and technically there was 10 ounces of product, but when I cut the lid off and pushed it down into the can–it went half way before there was any resistance from tomatoes and chilis. Was this a fluke?–I easily consumed the entire can. I opened a can for lunch the next day to see if the result was the same–It was-there was barely enough to cover my rice.
Here are the results of my experiment:
Then weighed on certified scales:
The RO*TEL Can contained .29lbs or 4.64ounces of chili’s and tomatoes while the HyTop contained .44lbs or 7.04 ounces, 2.4 ounces more or roughly 51% more product from the same 10ounce can. I cannot make the claim that RO*TEL has reduced the amount of product in their cans as I do not have a baseline to compare. I do know that it sure seems like a lot less product than I used to get in a can.
E-mail me and let me know if you’ve had the same experience Jim@surfcityiga.com
